I had a fascinating morning yesterday with our Mayor and City Manager – it was ABB’s Innovation and Technology Day. ABB is a leader in industrial automation and recently sold the first robot manufactured in the United States.
The morning was filled with updates about ABB’s investment in new technologies that will allow them to serve their customers more efficiently. I’ll admit, it was all a little over my head, especially the “intercloud” discussion.

We then toured the facility where staff showcased technology that was unique to ABB. We saw a lot of really interesting robots, but two that stood out were the robots that can make shoes in under three minutes and the UMI robot that made my espresso.

We are very proud that ABB has called Auburn Hills home for nearly 25 years. We wish them continued success!

I can’t take credit for the clever blog title. The honor goes to Mayor McDaniel, who at the ABB event yesterday, said that their company’s letters stood for “Another Booming Business.”
As announced at their event yesterday, ABB will be the first global industrial robotics company to manufacture robots in the United States. That’s a BIG deal. It’s a big deal for many reasons. This Switzerland-based company could have picked anywhere in the world to build robots, but they chose the City of Auburn Hills.
Since 2008, ABB has invested over $11 billion in U.S. manufacturing, making North America its largest growth region. Their investment was very strategic and intentional and we’re very delighted with their commitment to Auburn Hills.
In addition to the cool robot demonstrations and tours, ABB unveiled their newest robot, YuMi. YuMi is collaborative, dual arm, small parts assembly robot solution that includes flexible hands, parts feeding systems, camera-based part location and state-of-the-art robot control. YuMi is a vision of the future.
We were very honored to celebrate with ABB on this special occasion and wish them continued success in the future!

ABB is globally known for its robotics. Business is good and they have been ramping back up with the hiring of 150 employees over the last two years, with 25 to 30 positions still available. The company currently employs 450 people in the City of Auburn Hills.
We recently visited ABB and toured their facility at 1250 Brown Road. During the tour, we were able to view a power washing system for parts that they developed. The robots use water to clean the parts, not chemicals, so it’s very “green.”
A neat little story came out during our visit regarding the fame of their robots. The rock band Bon Jovi was performing at The Palace of Auburn Hills recently and ABB was contracted to build several robots to hold screens for their performance and a platform for lead singer Jon Bon Jovi to stand upon.
Bon Jovi used the robots during their performance to have one huge picture by combining several screens, then all the screens moved apart having the same picture on them. It was a real crowd pleaser. Pretty cool stuff these robots from ABB are involved in at night. So, what do ABB and Bon Jovi have in common? Robots!
We appreciate ABB being a part of Auburn Hills and look forward to great things coming from them as they continue to venture into new fields.
