River Monsters Invade Our Town

Posted by – Shawn Keenan, Water Resources Coordinator

The waters of Scotland have the Loch Ness Monster and Amity Island has the Great White Shark.  But, what monsters can be found in the Detroit River and Lake St. Clair?

Well, that question will be answered when the Bass Pro Shops Bassmaster Open makes its stop in the City of Auburn Hills this weekend.

Some of the nation’s top anglers will be trying their best to catch some of the largest bass our waters have to offer.

The tournament will include the Michigan, Ohio, and Ontario waters of Lake St. Clair, Detroit River, Lake Erie, and all rivers creeks and canals connected to them.  Only waters open to public fishing will be considered.

Between 100 and 150 boats will begin on Thursday, July 19th at Lake St. Clair Metropark in Harrison Township.  This number will be reduced to the final 12 boats for the last day of the tournament on Saturday, July 21st.

Teams must bring their fish to Auburn Hills alive for the final weigh-in on Saturday.  Only Largemouth, Smallmouth, Spotted, Redeye or Shoal bass may be entered.  After they are weighed, the fish will be kept alive and later released back into Lake St. Clair to grow even bigger.

So, catch the excitement in person when the top competitors bring their “monster” bass to Bass Pro Shop at Great Lakes Crossing Outlets for the final weigh-in this Saturday at 4:00 p.m. to determine the champions.
