Dig This … It’s For Your Safety!

Getting ready to install a fence, build a deck, or plant a tree?  Did you know that for your safety and others, State law requires you to notify MISS DIG before you excavate?

The City of Auburn Hills is proud to be the home of the headquarters for MISS DIG Systems, Inc., which is located at 3285 Lapeer Road West.

Established in 1970, the organization works to reduce damages to underground lines (e.g., natural gas, electric, cable, fiber optic, water, and sewer), prevent injuries, and save lives.

They process calls State-wide from people planning to dig and then notify their member utilities about these excavations. In turn, the utility companies then mark the dig site with stakes, flags, or paint to indicate the approximate location of their underground lines.  So, even though you call MISS DIG to report your work, they are not the ones who actually mark the utilities.

The MISS DIG System is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week to process emergency and non-emergency requests.  Since utility companies need at least 3 working days for routine requests to get a crew out to your property, please keep that in mind when planning your project.

So, before you dig please contact MISS DIG by calling either 811 or 800-482-7171.  You can also make an on-line request at www.missdig.org.

It’s not only for your safety, it’s the law.
